Most of us would be aware that crops are dependent on light, temperature, moisture and carbon dioxide concentration\u00a0in order\u00a0to produce the grains and other crop products\u00a0(which are\u00a0crucial\u00a0to our\u00a0nutrition and\u00a0health).\u00a0But the\u00a0levels of these\u00a0variable\u00a0inputs, such as\u00a0rainfall,\u00a0and temperature\u00a0have deviations\u00a0location wise every year.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
Temperature\u00a0variations can result in\u00a0implications for crop production, and the livelihood of crop producers. Crop management is therefore about managing climate risk\u00a0as well, in order to provide a\u00a0financially viable and\u00a0sustainable agricultural system to the feeding population. These climatic\u00a0changes can ultimately have an\u00a0impact on global trade, with implications for net exporters, net importers and consumers,\u00a0also\u00a0for national and global food security.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n Temperature\u00a0plays an important role in\u00a0photosynthesis & respiration, plant growth and phenological\u00a0development.\u00a0Phenology\u00a0is the study of cyclic and seasonal natural phenomena, especially in relation to climate and plant and animal life.\u00a0Extreme temperature can be often detrimental for crop yields growth and can even result in death of the plant.\u00a0\u00a0As per the IMD, the next\u00a06-8 weeks\u00a0are expected to be dominated by frequent and intense episodes of cold waves in the country. The main factor behind the\u00a0chilling\u00a0winter forecast is the prevailing weak La Ni\u00f1a over the Pacific Ocean since August 2020. Already\u00a0the Northern part of the country has started feeling the impact of mercury levels (I.e. temperature) dipping. Let us know about the temperature conditions preferable in cultivation of major Rabi crops,\u00a0because in forthcoming weeks it will be crucial to monitor the effect of temperature variations over the yields and\u00a0the\u00a0crop size.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
1. Chickpeas:\u00a0<\/strong><\/span>This crop performs\u00a0optimally in\u00a021\u00b0 to\u202f26\u00b0\u202fC during daytime\u00a0and\u00a0around\u00a018\u00b0 to\u202f21\u00b0C at\u00a0nights.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Cold\u202fstress adversely\u202faffects\u202fthe mobilization of food reserves from cotyledons that decreases embryonic growth, germination, and growth of\u202fchickpea\u202fseedlings<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n 2. Mustard:\u00a0<\/strong><\/span>Temperature\u202fabout 15-25\u00b0c is\u202fsuitable\u202ffor the cultivation, and the\u202feffect\u202fof low temperature (frost) during pods\u00a0and seed development stage,\u00a0leads to\u202ffreezing\u202finjury in seeds and\u00a0significant\u00a0reduction in the\u00a0yield.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n 3. Cumin :<\/strong><\/span>The seeds need 2 to 5 \u00b0C (36 to 41 \u00b0F) for emergence,\u00a0and\u00a0an\u202foptimum\u202fof 20\u201330 \u00b0C (68\u201386 \u00b0F) is suggested\u00a0by scientists.\u202fThis crop therefore requires a relatively cooler climate, but\u00a0vulnerable to frost damage, especially at flowering and early seed formation stages.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n 4. Maize:\u00a0<\/strong><\/span>(Rabi season)\u00a0is grown in temperatures between\u202f18\u00b0C\u202fand\u202f27\u00b0C\u202fduring the day and around\u202f14\u00b0C\u202fduring the night. But the most important factor is the 140 frost-free day\u00a0during its growth phase.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n 5. Coriander:<\/strong>\u00a0is a cool-season crop that\u00a0grows best\u00a0at temperatures between\u00a010\u00a0and\u202f30\u00a0degrees\u00a0C. It can tolerate temperatures as low as\u202f-12\u00a0degrees\u00a0C, but if\u00a0temperature\u00a0exceeds\u00a030\u00a0degrees\u00a0C\u00a0it will start to bolt.\u00a0Bolting\u202fis the production of a flowering stem (or stems) on agricultural and horticultural crops before the crop is harvested, in a natural attempt to produce seeds and reproduce.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
6. Barley:\u00a0<\/strong><\/span>The crop requires around 12-15\u00a0degree\u00a0C during growing period and around 30\u202fdegree\u00a0C at maturity. It cannot tolerate frost at any stage of growth and\u00a0occurrence\u00a0of frost at\u00a0flowering\u00a0stage\u00a0is\u00a0highly detrimental for yield.<\/span>
